School opens BiG travel agency
20th April 2008
Chaucer Business and Enterprise College is opening a travel agency with the help of BiG – Make it Your Business to help teach enterprise, tourism and media.
The Travel & Tourism Enterprise, funded by BiG, will provide information to local people wishing to expand their holiday horizons and to young people who might visit Sheffield on family holidays, school trips and cultural exchanges (using the school’s Hungarian school links as a starting point).
David Grey, Chair of BiG, says: “We have to engage and inspire young people in Sheffield to want to start their own businesses. This is a fantastic and original opportunity for pupils to get involved in a real enterprise and learn vital skills that will help them when they leave school and get out into the business world.”
The Enterprise will have its own dedicated space at the school and will be staffed by specialists who can deliver enterprise skills to industry standards.
Pupils working in the travel agency will learn about customer care marketing and market research, retail sales, travel journalism, photography and other media including film, music and web design.
Chaucer is a specialist Business and Enterprise college. Steve Robinson, Head Teacher, said: “For Chaucer’s young people, enterprise must begin and end with practical experience grounded in real life. This is true for students of all abilities, whether pursuing academic or more vocational pathways."
