Enterprise activity in schools

 
How enterprise is fitting in with Schools and Colleges across Sheffield:
 
All Saints School
All Saints is building entrepreneurialism into the qualifications it offers including the new Business, Administration and Finance Diploma. Students will organise a Summer Fair with support from entrepreneur mentors providing them with valuable experience of working with a budget and managing costs. All Saints is also developing a year 11 Enterprise unit based on the BiG Challenge so students will be involved in regular entrepreneurial activities.
 
Birley School
Birley is working towards a socially responsible enterprise culture amongst its students. For year 7 and 8, enterprise will be built into Science, Technology, English and Maths and students will have the chance to take part in whole day, deep learning experiences. Birley will offer a two day enterprise package to all its’ students and intends to support at least two teams in regional and national enterprise challenges.
 
Bradfield School
Bradfield will launch its new Business GCSE which will be delivered by the Assistant Head who has a background in business. In the first year, students will focus on ’Starting a Business’ and entrepreneur mentors will bring an extra dimension to the course. Bradfield also intends to link engineering activities into the BiG Challenge and to identify two strong teams to support in the competition.
 
Chaucer School
Chaucer plans to include an Enterprise unit in the Business, Administration and Finance Diploma, which was launched in September 2009 and it will offer two Enterprise units to year 11s. Local entrepreneurs will be available to support students in all enterprise activities. Chaucer would like to house the pilot for the Travel and Tourism Diploma in Chaucer Travel Agency and it hopes to open its’ doors to more students in the future.
 
City School
City intends to identify aspiring entrepreneurs by asking the whole school to take part in the Enterprise Survey, so it can then provide them with support. The school will offer training sessions, business start up support and is developing a loan framework. City School intends to develop its’ businesses in Art and Design and Technology by making products to sell in school, externally and online. Students of the Business, Administration and Finance and Creative and Media Diplomas, will support these businesses.
 
Ecclesfield School
Ecclesfield intends to drive enterprise and entrepreneurship with its cutting edge Design and Technology facilities and a motivated team of teachers. The main focus is to develop a cross curricula business model, creating a range of ‘class-set’ resources which it can offer to other schools in Sheffield.  Students will be linked to local businesses for mentoring and to help to identify potential customers for future design work.


Firth Park School
Firth Park will develop its successful “Institute of Finance” course for Key Stage 4 students with the support of entrepreneurs from the financial services sector. The school is concentrating on staff development, which includes preparing for the delivery of the Business and ICT Diplomas in September 2010. The school intends to provide trading opportunities for BiG Challenge teams at local events and will invest in 20 digital video cameras to enhance the enterprise activity at Key Stage 3.
 
Fir Vale School
Fir Vale plans to make the most of its Enterprise Centre, helping both students and the wider community to engage with enterprise and entrepreneurship.  This includes a programme of visits to the Enterprise Centre, with a focus on support from the local business community. To raise the profile of the Enterprise Centre, Fir Vale will host events for the BiG Programme and will host a series of workshops for people interested in becoming entrepreneurs.
 
Handsworth Grange School
Handsworth Grange will target specific  age groups with Enterprise Education including an Enterprise module for all year 9 groups and a year 7 Enterprise project. Year 11 students will continue their ASDAN accredited enterprise course, developing products and services in readiness for the BiG Challenge and potential sales opportunities.  Aspiring entrepreneurs will be given the opportunity to work in a real business environment in the school shop and students will gain support from local entrepreneurs in the form of mock interviews and at career events.  
 
High Storrs School
High Storrs plans to produce a promotional film about Sheffield, from a young person’s point of view. A large number of students will be involved in planning, producing and promoting the film across Sheffield and further afield and entrepreneur support will be available. A group of students will also focus on maximising advertising revenue, to support the development of the film.
 
Hinde House School
Hinde House will focus on embedding enterprise and entrepreneurship into the Key Stage 3 curriculum. Entrepreneurs will support the delivery of this programme. Hinde House will work with Sheffield company AESEAL on the ‘Get the edge’ programme.  This will allow students to develop their engineering skills and also to develop their awareness of the entrepreneurial opportunities available in the Sheffield engineering sector.


King Ecgberts School
The annual Christmas Cracker event will be transformed into a true enterprise opportunity by students from the Design and Technology Department. Year 8 Students will work in groups to produce quality products which they will design, cost and manufacture themselves. Suspended timetable days will be given an entrepreneurial and enterprising spin with activities focused on team work and problem solving. year 7 students will be encouraged to enhance their Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, with specific lessons themed towards entrepreneurial thinking and skills.
 
King Edward School
King Edward VII plans to develop a brand of stationery, such as memory sticks and branded clothing with members of the Alumni club as their target customers. The school also plans to hold 5-a-side football tournaments during one school term which will generate income through the booking of its Astroturf facilities.  
 
Livetech at Red Tape Central
Livetech will continue to develop the successful business model it has established, training young people for their IT Practitioners NVQ qualification. Livetech intends to increase its revenue, expanding the computer repair and recycle services that the company offers. Links between the Business, Administration and Finance Diploma and the IT Diploma will be developed as some students will be placed in the business.  Livetech will also be built into the evolving work of the National Enterprise Academy.
 
Longley Park Sixth Form College
Students will have access to specific enterprise-themed learning opportunities including ‘Starting a Business’ and ‘Managing an Event’ guidance. Longley Park also plans to further extend its mentoring programme amongst its family of secondary schools, working with both staff and students.
 
Meadowhead School
Year 8 students will take part in the Innovate Challenge, developing products to advertise and sell at the ‘Meadowhead Trade Fair’. Prizes will be awarded for profit, team work and innovation. Around 60 year 9 students with learning difficulties will do a Business Studies course, undertaking entrepreneurial projects such as fundraising events. There are two new courses for year 10 and year 11 students: ‘Financial Capability’ and ‘Preparation for Working Life’, both with entrepreneurial elements. Meadowhead also plans to create an Enterprise Area for the above activity.


Myers Grove School
The school plans to develop a series of resources and models to promote entrepreneurship in the new Diplomas, with support and input from local entrepreneurs. Myers Grove intends to establish more school businesses, following the launch of the school’s Art Business, which is now a Limited Company. Ideas include a school shop and a school bank and students will be encouraged to play an active role in developing these businesses.
 
Newfield School
Year 11 Business students will receive a two day enterprise package to encourage entrepreneurial and enterprising thinking and, with the help of the entrepreneurs to support the activity. Newfield intends to run internal enterprise challenges and simulations such as SimVenture and would like to support at least ten teams in regional and national competitions.
 
Notre Dame School
Notre Dame intends to purchase specialist sublimation equipment to support business ventures such as producing T-shirts, signage and canvasses. This technology provides an affordable means of fast tracking product design and production. Notre Dame would like to start a lunch time Enterprise Club and will also be establishing it in Key Stage 4 PSHE and engaging year 12 and year 13 students with younger members of the school.  
 
Sheffield Park Academy
Park Academy is keen to formally establish its Recycling Business with the continued support of local entrepreneurs. The academy is looking into a starting a catering service for the elderly in the local community, maximising the use of its catering facilities. By involving entrepreneurs in different subject areas, Park Academy intends to help staff and students relate the curriculum to enterprise.
 
Parkwood Academy
Parkwood will build on its established and successful Digital Magazine which focuses on local events and issues. The Academy has decided to now turn the focus specifically to student enterprise and entrepreneurship, offering advice and celebrating the achievements of local young entrepreneurs. A student editorial team will put three issues of the magazine together each year and local businesses will be offered advertising space in order to create revenue.


Sheffield Springs Academy
Springs has an established Box Office business which it plans to continue to run, employing the support of entrepreneurs and recruiting a strong management team of Key Stage 4 and 5 students. Springs will offer mentoring for BiG Challenge teams and local entrepreneurs will deliver workshops covering the key aspects of Business Start-up. Springs will also take part in Global Entrepreneurship week, Charity Week and the Schools Network event.
 
Silverdale School
Silverdale will take a full day off from the regular timetable to engage in National Enterprise Week. The school intends to work with a business on a realistic challenge which will see students competing to solve a business problem. Silverdale hopes that the participating business will put the idea into practice. The school also plans to take part in the BiG Challenge and the Make Your Mark challenge, with support from entrepreneurs.
 
Stocksbridge School
The school plans to develop enterprise resources for each year group in both of its specialist areas, Maths and Computing. Key Stage 4 students will gain support and advice on developing their business plans from local entrepreneurs.
 
Tapton School
Tapton’s dedicated Enterprise Coordinator will lead on implementing the Enterprise Survey and providing follow up entrepreneurial support for targeted students. Students in year 9 will have an introductory entrepreneurial activity day.
 
Westfield School
Year 10 and year 11 students at Westfield will do an Enterprise and Employability GCSE in their core ICT lessons, undertaking an enterprise activity such as running a business venture. Company Days will be an opportunity for students to plan, design and sell a product or service to other students with support and advice from local entrepreneurs. Business students from year 9, year 10 and year 11 and the IT Diploma students will take part in a one day SimVenture competition.  
 
Wisewood School
Wisewood will continue to develop its Women’s Cyclewear design business and the school will focus on embedding enterprise into qualifications such as the new Business, Administration and Finance Diploma. The Entrepreneurial elements of the BTEC Sport course will be developed and students in year 10 will be offered business skills training. The school will also be taking part in the BiG Challenge, Make Your Mark Challenge and SimVenture competitions.
 
Yewlands School
The state of the art facilities in Yewlands’ new building will provide the opportunity for students to print and manufacture products, encouraging them to use the facilities in an entrepreneurial way. An apprentice will be recruited to support this activity.


BiG Enterprise Survey

The BiG Enterprise Survey 2009 surveyed 2,300 students aged 11-18
 
The results
 
  • Every successful business starts with a good idea and 64% of students agree that 'anybody with a good idea is capable of starting up his or her own business.'
  • The future looks very promising with nearly two-thirds (63%) of students believing that they have a good idea that could potentially make money.
  • More than 70% of respondents think that starting their own business is a good idea and over 62% are interested in setting up their own enterprise in the future.
  • This year, more than 100 students that took part in the survey are already running their own business!
  • 90% of students say they are eager to succeed and 58% say they are not afraid of things going wrong.
  • 85% of students rate themselves as confident at solving problems.
  • 70% of participants want to know more about making a job out of something they enjoy, demonstrating a shift in young people's attitudes towards work as something you can enjoy whilst making money at the same time.
